Have more confidence every day
Confidence is an elusive concept that so many women struggle with. It can be so hard to maintain a beaming sense of confidence in light of all the things in the world that aim to tear us down. There are so many negative voices screaming at us that we’re not enough — from the media, to beauty ideals, to other women, and even the own voices in our heads. Plus, even when we manage to have confidence, we have to be careful not to be “too much” since that’s another common reason to criticize women. The world tells us clearly they don’t want women to have “too much” confidence. Fuck that, I say.
It’s vital to build your confidence up if you feel like you lack it. As you work to build your confidence, you will find that the most beneficial things to help you come from within. Here’s a few to consider:
- Meditation: I discovered meditation almost 5 years ago now. And I truly believe it has helped my outlook on life — plus it helps me own my sexy even when I don’t feel like it!
- Affirmations: These are short mantras that are simple ways you can remind yourself of how wonderful you truly are. Try writing a few statements of your own that feel good. It can be as simple as, “I am confident.”
- Mirror Work: This practice was pioneered by Louise Hay and is well-known in the self-helpy world. I would love for you to try it. It is the perfect way to change the dialogue you have with yourself.
- Self Care: This can be as simple as running yourself a decadent bath and taking time out of your day that’s just for you.
It’s hard to feel confident in your own body and self if you’re constantly in a negative state.
Confidence-building practices don’t have to be time consuming or take over your entire day. Take self care for instance – you can build this into your day in 5-15 minute increments if that’s all you have available to start with. Once when I was feeling down on myself and texted my bestie about it, he replied with the suggestion that I do one thing today that will make me feel better in the long run, like choosing a salad for lunch instead of a burger, and one thing that will make me feel better right now, like popping out for a mani/pedi. I LOVE this advice and return to it often.
I’m the last person to go to the gym on the reg, but exercise is a fantastic way to build your confidence. When I actually do go to the gym, I totally remember that fact! As you build your strength, stamina and power, you will start to see yourself in a new way. We so often tie weight loss to exercise so there can be a negative connotation in our head around the idea of exercising. Just focus instead on treating your body with love and support and building your health is an excellent way to feel more confident.
Similarly, establishing a gratitude practice can build your confidence and center your focus on the positive. It’s hard to feel confident in your own body and self if you’re constantly in a negative state. By recalibrating your focus on gratitude, you open yourself up to a more positive mindset overall and this helps bring confidence back.
Practice visualization. I have often joked that I wish photoshop could follow me around in real life, and I realized that it CAN – in my head! You can take you own self-image and mentally photoshop it. Change the dialogue in your head! See yourself the way you truly want to! It will help you feel empowered to take steps to match the inner vision and the one you see in the mirror.
Building your confidence is a day by day process that pays off over time. You need confidence in all areas of your life — from business, to relationships, to how you see yourself in the world — so it’s definitely worth the effort.
